Which Multitool Blades Can You Sharpen?

With the SharpTool 2.0, you can sharpen most common multitool blades used for cutting, including:

  • HCS (High Carbon Steel)
  • HSS (High-Speed Steel)
  • BIM (Bi-Metal)
  • Titanium-coated blades*

*Titanium-coated blades can be sharpened multiple times. However, keep in mind that the coating is only a thin layer and will wear off after several sharpening cycles.

Blades Not Suitable for SharpTool 2.0

Carbide blades are not suitable for sharpening with the SharpTool 2.0.

Carbide is only applied to the teeth and is significantly harder than the sharpening head. Using the SharpTool 2.0 will wear down the sharpening head while grinding away the carbide itself, causing the blade to lose its cutting performance.

You can recognize a carbide blade by its name and distinct cutting edge.

Can You Sharpen Carbide Blades at All?

Yes, but only with the right approach.

Carbide blades can be sharpened briefly using a single grinding wheel, working tooth by tooth. However, the carbide layer is very thin, and it’s easy to grind through it quickly. Once the carbide is gone, the blade effectively becomes a standard HCS, HSS, or BIM blade.

At that point, you can still use the blade for softer materials like wood, but it will no longer perform as a carbide blade.

For sharpening carbide, always use a diamond wheel, not the SharpTool 2.0. The SharpTool 2.0 uses CBN, which is not suitable for carbide.
